Why on the farm?
Rambling Roots Academy was created to provide children the opportunity to explore, learn, and grow while being immersed in the natural beauty of our farm. We believe that the most meaningful learning happens when children are connected to the world around them—especially the natural world.
The rise in families seeking educational enrichment programs and supplemental learning opportunities reflects a growing desire for more flexible, holistic approaches to childhood education. Traditional classroom settings often prioritize standardized instruction, leaving many parents searching for alternatives that foster creativity, hands-on learning, and individualized growth.
Farm-based education, like other nature-inspired models, offers a compelling answer to this need. Rooted in real-world experiences, farm programs encourage children to engage with the natural cycles of life, animals, plants, and ecosystems, creating a rich and dynamic learning environment. This approach not only supports cognitive and social development but also instills essential life skills such as responsibility, problem-solving, and teamwork. As families increasingly recognize the value of outdoor, experiential learning, farm-based education stands out as a unique and meaningful way to inspire curiosity, connection, and confidence in young learners.
At Rambling Roots Academy, we don’t just teach; we cultivate a love for discovery and growth in every child. By joining our program, your child will experience an education that goes far beyond the classroom, rooted in the beauty, challenges, and rewards of the natural world.
Benefits of farm-based learning include:

Inquiry-Based Education
Curiosity is the cornerstone of our approach to learning. Our weekly curriculum topics are designed to plant the seeds of curiosity, sparking questions and wonder that guide each child’s natural exploration. These foundational themes provide structure while allowing children the freedom to follow their interests, delve deeper into what excites them, and build meaningful connections through hands-on experiences.
Interest-Led Learning Within a Montessori Framework
Our program combines the structure of a Montessori-inspired scope and sequence with the flexibility of child-led exploration. Weekly topics—such as life cycles, feathered friends, or understanding feelings through nature—act as a starting point, opening the door to endless possibilities for curiosity and discovery. Guided by knowledgeable educators, children take ownership of their learning, exploring topics at their own pace and pursuing the questions that captivate them most.
We are committed to meeting each child where they are academically, tailoring lessons and activities to match their individual needs and helping them grow from their unique starting point. This personalized approach ensures that children build confidence, master essential skills, and feel supported every step of the way.
With over 12 years of experience working in licensed childcare, primarily with children ages 3-5, Grace has dedicated her life to nurturing young minds. Her time in a Montessori-blended curriculum deepened her belief in child-led learning, which now forms the foundation of her approach at Rambling Roots Academy. During her teaching, Grace met her co-teacher, Kylie Barr, and together they formed a natural partnership, sharing a vision where children thrive in a warm, hands-on learning environment as they build real-world skills. Together, we ensure each child feels happy, valued and empowered.
Originally from the south suburbs of Chicago, Grace always dreamed of three things: becoming a mom, starting an animal rescue, and being a teacher. After moving to the Lowcountry, she began fulfilling her rescue dreams by rehoming farm animals in need. Her childhood dream of teaching, combined with her love for animals and nature, has come to life through Rambling Roots Academy. Grace is passionate about fostering a close-knit community where children can explore, experience those magical “aha” moments, and appreciate the simple joys of life—whether it’s a day spent outside or a new discovery on the farm.
Grace is excited to continue her teaching journey with Ms. Kylie by her side, creating an educational experience that blends the best of Montessori principles with farm-based, hands-on learning for the families who join Rambling Roots Academy.
Ms. Kylie is an enthusiastic early childhood educator with a passion for nurturing young minds. Growing up in South Carolina, she developed a love for teaching and caring for children that began with seven years of babysitting. This hands-on experience laid a solid foundation for her role as the Head of Childcare for two years, where she honed her leadership skills and deepened her understanding of child development.
For the past two years, Ms. Kylie has been teaching at a Montessori preschool, embracing the philosophy of fostering independence and creativity in children. Currently, she is pursuing an Associate's degree in Early Childhood Development to further enhance her knowledge and skills in the field.
In addition to her dedication to education, Ms. Kylie is a proud pet owner, sharing a home with three dogs, two cats, and two lizards. She believes that a nurturing environment, whether in the classroom or at home, is essential for growth and learning.
Ms. Kylie is excited to continue inspiring young learners and looks forward to creating a positive, engaging, and supportive classroom atmosphere.
